farmall md choke

where is the proper location for the choke rod and voltage rergulator on a 51md. also what is the correct choke rod for the tractor?????

The choke rod is a 7/32 diameter (about 8ga) wire running along the right side and through the lower bracket on the steering support column.

I think the regulator is on the gas tank support, in front of the battery. Best remembrance. Jim

Jim putting a picture of a 51 support equiped for a voltage regulator. Has a bracket between regulator and rear tank support to clear switchover linkage. May not be a right or wrong way on the choke. Two holes at the top of tank support were used. MD serial # 261774 from factory was on the right of the steering post. IH had complaints about difficult operation so a bulliten was sent out suggesting the rod be reformed to work on the left side. Starting MD serial 285421 it was moved to the left on production tractors. Choke rods have a knob instead of a loop on the end. Have noticed 2 different ones in the past but can't remember what the difference was now. Think if you find one from a tractor that came with a voltage regulator it would be it.

Wanted to say assembled on the right from serial 261774 up and all made before serial 285421. Then changed to the left. If the tractor is a 51 below 261774 I don't know if they came with a standard choke rod. Some MD didn't come with a choke operating rod.

Exact information is hard to find for some things on a MD. Tried to come up with the correct information if the tractor is below serial # 261774. Looks like the choke rod was through right hole in the support and no voltage regulator was mounted there. Looks like regulators for a MD may have started at 261774, thats when the regulator got in the way of operating the choke on the right. Before voltage regulators a relay was mounted up in front of the engine. Don't know if this helps but its the best I can come up with at the time. Had a 50 51 & 52 model but I can't remember some of the small differances now. Edit not working is reason for new posts.
