VR Adjustable?

1. If I keep pos gnd and only add a 12v battery and a ballasts resister to the ign/coil wire will it burn out my 6v vr or will everything work ok but just charge 6-7v.

2. I have the original 1956 6v vr (Part No. 360898R91). I remember someone posting that you can easily adjust a 6v vr to 12v. I am hoping I would just put a voltmeter on the battery and adjust the vr until it read 13-14v. I enclosed a pictorial of my vr. Would it be adjusting screw number 8 (top left) or 14 (bottom right).

In the above post using the IH parts page:

No. 8 is labeled - adjusting screw cut-out relay armature

No. 14. is labeled - current - voltage regulator armature adjust

Which one will increase output to 13-14v.

Thanks,
Dell

It's NOT as simple as you think. Ralphing on the VR adjusting screw #14, WILL increase the regulated voltage, whether up to the 13-14 Volts, I don't know.

HOWEVER, the other relay, the cutout relay, will NEVER drop out at engine shutdown once closed when connected to a 12 Volt battery, "killing" your battery and likely letting precious smoke out of the VR and generator. I'm not going to guess how far that one can be adjusted.

Do yourself and the smoke inside your electrical system a favor and get a 12 Volt VR. Why not a 12 Volt generator, as well?

Bob,
Thanks for the response. I took my own advice and did a good check in the archives and found two really deep discussions on the workings and adjustment of the VR.

I guess my tractor heard the long discussion we had here in the last week on the Bosch VR. I normally get about 5 years out of a battery on my 300U's but one just failed on me with only 2 1/2 years on it.
Just out of warrantee, go figure.

I have decided to give one more 6v battery a chance. If it doesn't hold up this winter for snowplowing then I will convert the system to 12v. Actually there is a complete stock system for the 350U available. I like the way my stock coil is mounted horizontal on top of the distributor with the two small wires on one end and the large wire on the other.

Thanks,
Dell
