Where to find good batteries for good price (in bulk)??

Hey guys, I just ran into a bad situation this morning. I have found that one of my 140's 6 volt battery is shot completely dead and gone. I need to purchase a new one, however they aren't so easy to find especially a GOOD ONE and at a good price. I have 28 other Farmall tractors and buy them all the time, so I'll have even more than that as time goes by.

I would like to know where I can buy GOOD 12 volt and 6 volt batteries at a FAIR PRICE (cheapest possible). Going to NAPA or Advance Auto and spending $80-$100 every time I buy a tractor just aint gonna get it!!!

ANY IDEAS???

Are there any Batteries Plus or Interstate Battery Shops nearby?? Id say a good cheap (yeah right) 6 volt battery is a thing of the past due to such limited use and demand nowadays. There are some "good" 6 volt golf cart batteries (around $80 and more) but thats a whole different topic and application. Some like Optima AGM while others do NOT for old tractor use, but they are just so pricey I dont see that option being economically advantageous.

A cheap battery tender may be in your future?

Thanks so much John. I will check with both Interstate and Batteries Plus, as I didn't know the latter dealt in automotive batteries.

99% of the time I need a battery is when I buy a "dead" tractor that doesn't have one at all. Also, I need the most economical battery to cut costs as much as I can, therefore the Optima would be out of the question.

RAE battery also has some very good worth while batteries. Took one out of a ford 1910 that saw every day use as a utility tractor. Had been in there for 10 years. They also may sell batteries by the pallet. Look for a RAE dealer near you

Pat,
He buys batteries and puts his own label on them.He used to build them in days gone buy.I have a couple of his batteries and can only say good things about them.He is located in Berlin,CT if it helps thefellow looking for them.

How many do you run at one time? With 28 tractors, I wouldn't keep that many batteries around. They just go bad over time. Each one would need a maintnance charge as well.

After I put in a voltmeter a couple weeks ago, figured out my 2606 has a bad cell. Doesn't take long to drop to 11 and then 10 volts when I turn the lights on. I keep a cheap HF maintenance charger on it and it cranks over enough to start which is all I need.

We can get good 6v batts here for 40 when on sale and on Wed get a senior discount when not on sale. I always get a new one when on sale so i have a spare they usually last 6 or more yrs.

I go to a local auto salvage yard. 12 volt batteries are $15.00. They will load test them to assure they are good.

I agree with "bc" and would keep just a couple of good 6 and/or 12 v. batteries on a "tender", to install whenever I ran one or two of the tractors. If you don't use them on a regular basis, they would probably be dead when you need them anyway.

Batteries that aren't used regularly will fail more quickly. Just buy several and swap them in and out when needed. I have all Walmart's best batteries in 3 vehicles and they're now over 8 years old. Hal

I just last week had to buy one for my 55 cub !

I shopped the web and even Battery Giant , the cheapest i found was like $70.00 all the way to $114.00.

By chance i was at a local Sams club on "Black Friday" and happened to look at batterys there.

I got a brand new 6v for $56.oo......

Also buy your self some battery tenders they make batterys last years longer.

We found them on the internet for $23.00 shipped to the door [6v].

Interstate battery is a distributor company, they do not make batteries.
They are only good as boat anchors.
My local (southwest michigan) auto parts store (6 stores) sells rebuilt batteries, 6v or 12v, for $29.95. They last as good as any brand new battery I have ever used.
Actually he told me that most all batteries sold as new are actually, in some form or other, rebuilt.

I have three 6 volt Farmalls and I get my batteries at a farm and home store called Orscheln. I believe they are headquartered in Moberly, Missouri and are scrattered all over this state. Don't know where you are located so you could certainly be out of their area. I've had exceptional service from their 6 volt batteries and I've gotten them as low as $29.99 when on sale. I believe the regular price is around $50 but it's been a few years now since I bought one as they seem to last well over 5 or 6 years for sure, Hal.

Thanks guys. The Sams Club idea sounds good, although I'm gonna have to check with our store. Also, you are exactly right I looked at Walmarts batteries and theirs are about half the price of napa, advance, etc. Keeping only a couple batteries around to swap over from tractor to tractor would be too much of a hassle. Have you thus ever struggled with that darned battery box on the Super A's, 100's, and 140's??? Now I know why its hard to find a complete one. Haha, the PO just threw it away.

Hello all!! I just got finished painting the Super A and have just came inside. I am with James and AL on the Sams club idea. I just hope that wasn't a black Friday sale price. Yea, I wouldn't imagine AL wouldn't want to keep just a couple batteries around because he fixes them up to show them and sell them, so I'm sure they are always getting cranked. I think I remember him saying he has around 40 something last time I bought parts from him while he was passing through KY. Thank you all so much for your help.

Vito, i really like the way he does business also, He keeps his warehouse heated in the winter with propane heat blowers and keeps the batteries off the ground. Just a nice guy to do business with and have had nothing but good-luck with his batteries

Farmallhal:

I'm with you on the $30.00 6volt battery.
The last one i bought i got from tractor supply for $30.00 , but that was five years ago.

I'm told the hole battery industry priceing has gone up a lot in the past five years.

I was shocked when everyone was telling me between $75.00 and $100.00 dollars for a simple 6v battery.

James, I bought a new group 24 or 27 12 volt battery earlier this year from our Co-Op type store (MFA) which sells good rugged farm equipment batteries and as I recall it was something like $130. Prior to that the last one I remember getting was a large non-typical size for a Ford 5610 diesel tractor and it was about the same amount a couple of years earlier from my Ford New Holland dealer. All of my 6 volt batteries are probably around five years old or more so I might be surprised when I have to replace one it sounds, Hal.

Chet Nichols Auto Parts. 6 stores in southwest michigan.
The $29 batteries are rebuilts and they work fine.
The guy that is in charge of all 6 stores mentioned it again to me yesterday so I know they still have them.

Ok, it's 08:18 Monday morning. I just got off the phone with the man at Chet Nichols Auto Parts in southwest Michigan.
If the counter guy doesn't have a clue about the batteries tell them to ask Rene (manager) about them or better yet give them your number and ask to have Rene call you.

Here is the straight dope on their $29.00 batteries:
They get them from a warehouse next day delivered.
They are available in 12v only.
The batteries may be blemished or otherwise thought to be defective.
If defect found they are completely rebuilt and sold as reconditioned.
If no defect found they are tested and resold as reconditioned.
They is a 30 day warrantee.

So you could possibly get a $100 battery for $29.00.
This is a local pickup price. You will have to make your own deal on shipping.
But it might be worth a drive if you are going to purchase several.

Good luck,
Dell

I forgot to mention that the company I mentioned above also has everday
brand new 6v batteries for $59.95
brand new 12v batteries for $49.95

Both have 24 month full replacement warrantee. No pro rating.
If in 24 months in goes bad you get a new one.
