Im working on a 450 with a TA, it worked earlier this month when it was warmer and now it slips under load. I could not get it to slip at all in 4th gear going up hill and pushing on the breaks. I checked the rearend oil very milky with about the texture of fresh bulk tank milk, yet coffey color. Two questions first could the water in the oil be causing the one way clutch to slip? Also if that is not the problem what goes out in these TA's, im assuming its this one way clutch when sliping in low range? Fianlly if all the rest of the parts in the TA are fine can i just replace this one way clutch? Im going to drain it and run some diesel though it latter today. Perhaps something is stuck from the water and oil?

thanks
Andrew

You are on the right track. If the new ytran (or equal) does not cure the issue, it will need a ramp and rollers. Look at the disk and TA throwout bearing to be sure they are servicable or you will be splitting it to do that later.

Thanks Jim for the info, is replacing those parts something that i can perform with normal shop tools or do i need something speical ?

thanks
Andrew

There are two types of sprague, so I cannot tell for sure. A press might be needed. Others will chime in. Jim

I did my 300 with no special tools. Although some have "star" bolts that will need a special socket (I had 1 out of 3). Not really special but I did go to an auto parts store to get the correct one. I think a 12-point socket will work but it didn"t grab onto the entire head. They had it on hand, I think he said they use that same style head bolts in chevy transfer cases. Dunno about that one.

I have replacement ramp and rollers on hand. The carrier must be turned to 2.858 or more to work with a .010 oversized roller. As far as doing it yourself that should be no problem. Couple of pry bars and a 5/16 allen head socket or 3/8 12 point socked will get ya there. Any questions on putting it back together feel free to email.
