My H wouldnt start today,so i removed the distributor cap to see if the points were breaking. i hit the starter to turn it over and the dist. shaft is not turning.it has a live hyd.pump and a vertical distributor. was running fine. anybody got any ideas what could be wrong? thanks. Jim Iowa.

Its either in your distributor gears. or most likely because it has live hyd pump, its the cam gear or gears up front that drive it. I thought I was told once that when a non live hyd tractor is fitted with a live pump that the front gears have to be heavier. Maybe someone with more knowledge of this will chime in, hope this helps.

Jim,

Are you real sure that it is a '52?

It should have been fitted with a horizontal distributor and the heavier gears up front, as the breakpoint was in 1951.

Maybe the engine has been replaced with an older one at some time?

The vertical Delco distributor has a cover plate that can be removed,(the coil will be mounted to it) and I think this will allow you to see the gears that drive it, but I think the problem might be deeper. The vertical Delco was quite often used when adding a live pump to prevent the spark plug wires from rubbing on the oil filter canister.

If the pump is a M&W with the hydraulic lines attaching to back side of pump. Engine is already out of time so pull the distributor and check gear and pin to shaft and also see if the distributor drive gear is turning. If the distributor drive gear is not turning you will need to check the drive on the front of pump that engages the slots in the ignition drive. If still no problem the main drive gears under front engine cover would be a suspected problem. You could use a IH distributor in the vertical position with the M&W pump I mention.

check the drive gears in the distributor at the 90 degree housing. if you have not greased them in a while, i suspect they are stripped out. the '42 m i have did the same thing. if those gears are ok, pull the valve cover and crank the engine over and look for movement in the valve train. if the valves are not opening and closing, it could have sheared the cam gear. the 52 h should have the heavier cam gear tho.

Yes im sure its a 52. it has a m&w live pump with hyd lines out the rear.the dist is vertical wlth 2 piece points.is this delco or IH? thanks Jim Iowa.

Both would work, but that type pump was made to use on a H with the IH distributor. Since the 52 H probably came with a distributor with 2 piece points thats what you probably have. On the round body below the distributor cap the IH will have 6 numbers followed by R1 for a positive ID.
