International 460 Fluids and steering

Picked up a 460 international utility with loader today. Got her to fire off and runs great. Iam waiting for the manual on this tractor. Seems the steering unit under the dash wont turn. The steering wheel attaches to it and it has a u joint on the bottom of it. Is this unit a power steering unit? Seems to have a couple of lines to it. If so, where is the steering fluid filler? Also where do you add the hydralic fluid on this tractor. Any help is appreciated.

I have had mine apart and don't remember a u-joint. Power steering uses Hytran, the source is the fluid in the transmission. Plug is at the top front of the transmission housing. However, the steering gears in the housing at the bottom of the steering column use 90W.

i have a regular 460 and the power steering is in the front on the left side of the tractor. two small steel lines run to it. the power steering runs off the hyd pump. there should be a small plate to the right of your shifter with three bolts in it. clean around it good before taking it loose. this is the fill hole. there is a plug on the left side of the trany in front of the axle. take it out , pour hyd-tran oil in the fill hole until it starts to come out the side plug hole. the filter is on the right side of the trany. its for the tranny , hyd , and steering. its under a plate with six bolts i think, have to go look to be sure. when you take it off have a pail under it to catch the oil that comes out. the plate is also spring loaded so watch out if the gasket holds it after the bolts are out and all of a sudden it pops off. its 1/2 inch plate so its slightly heavy and you dont want it on your foot. two filter in there . ones a metal screen, ones a paper filter. just wash the metal one. if you live in a cold climate the paper filter will absorb moisture and freeze and you will loose hyd and steering ,

Maybe Iam off on the steering system. Could it be that the steering on this tractor is non power, and that the unit below the steering wheel under the dash is just a steering gear box? A u joint comes out of it on the bottom and the steering rods run down the left side of the tractor where they are connected to another u joint.and are joined there .

When you refill it, get a dowel, stick, or measuring tape and run it to the bottom past the gears to mark and measure you a dipstick. Then you never have to pull the plug again. Another thing you can do is mark/measure every quart or gallon of the last couple gallons you add.

That plate will also be the source along with the shifter of rain water and snow/ice melt getting into tranny besides the usual condensation. I'd think about some RTV on that gasket. A big tomato can/5 gal bucket over the shifter will help some.

If you have steering shafts going the the front of the tractor you have a Farmall 460, not an International 460.

The Farmall power steering unit is located in the front of the tractor just ahead of the front U joint. There will be two hydraulic lines running to it.

The International power steering unit is located under the fuel tank. Instead of a shaft running to the front axle there are steering arms, one on each side of the tractor, connected to the steering arms on the spindles.

The tractor is definitely a 460 Utility. The frozen steering unit is directly under the dash . The steering wheel is attached to it. Distance between the steering wheel and this unit is only a matter of inches. The unit is cone shaped and only about 10 inches in length.

Go to the farm store and pick up an IH-25 manual.

Those steering hand pumps should turn even if even if it isn't running. Maybe some moisture got past the top seal or something.
