I have a friend that has a Farmall 450, it has 'R' on the serial tag, the books tells that this tractor has a TA with trans driven PTO. Question being is that is it possible to get a live pto on this tractor or not ?

No, your friend is screwed.

IPTO starts with the spring retainer/cover on the main clutch pressure plate. Everything else is different all the way back to the PTO shaft sticking out the back of the tractor.

Everything can be swapped out if one is so inclined.

It is certainly possible. Whether it is practical is another question. R code lists TA with transmission driven PTO so there are some parts that you can reuse compared to a tractor without TA and with transmission driven PTO. In your case the PTO is actually driven in the same manner as the IPTO instead of being driven by the transmission counter shaft so I don't think any changes are necessary in the transmission.

Along with the PTO units themselves,the differences start with the clutch pressure plate. The IPTO unit needs a PPS cover that had the hub for the IPTO drive shaft. The single shaft coming out of the clutch needs to be replaced and the IPTO gear added. On the bottom shaft in the clutch housing the lower gear needs to be replaced. Since the IPTO unit is a planetary drive unit the input shaft runs at a different speed than the transmission driven PTO. The bottom shafts also have to be changed an i believe a bearing added at the back of the clutch housing.
 
Ok thanks guys, just wondering never seen this code before and didnt know what the diffrence was. Seen a million 'S's but not the R before.
