Why is this Farmall Restoration book so expensive?

Okay, so I was working on a "Christmas List" by just searching on Amazon and found this book listed "How To Restore Classic Farmall Tractors: The Ultimate Do-it-Yourself Guide to Rebuilding and Restoring (Paperback)" by Tharron E. Gaines.

From what I have found it was published in 2005 and is now out of print. It was $29.95 new, but now to get a new one on Amazon you have to pay $295 or $180 used.

Is the book worth having? I plan on restoring/refurbishing an H next summer (first project) . Should I hunt down a copy? Does anyone have one they want to sell at a decent price?

It"s an interesting read but not an awful lot of useful detailed information. If you are going to restore your first tractor money would be better spent on the proper manuals that go to your tractor, along with heavy reliance on this site. Just my opinion.

I just had to have a copy several years ago, and found it"s more a "coffee table" book, and not a "how to". Beautiful photos, but if you"re looking for more detailed guidance there are much better books out there by Yost or Pripps.

I recently ordered this book from Amazon. I was notified that the book was out of stock and they would back order it. About a week later I got an email stating they could not get the book. Hey PAULN_NJ I'm assuming you are in New Jersey. Where? I'm in northern Hunterdon County.

Book is ok, I suppose--I forgot I had it. But, be sure you get the service and parts manuals, plus an I&T manual.

I also have the book. I just recently looked it over again. It is not a replacement for the service manual. To me it just gives general information some of which I didn't necessarily agree with. I bought mine several years ago, but probably would not have bought it if I had had a chance to look it over in advance. Roger

180.00,...i'd let mine go for a lot less....it is a nice read but lacks in depth info, has nice photos

My son bought a book on restoring tractors written by a JD guy who professionally restore only JD. I read it just to see what the guy had to say. For me it was a waste of time. I've been a pro mech and really didn't learn anything I didn't know. For a beginner it would be a great book. Had a lot of common sense advice and took you through the whole process to include paint for the beginner (Advised painting the hood first and stated that because it's mostly smooth surface it's easy to resand and repaint till you get it right). I think he paid about 25 for it at a TSC store.

I'll see if he still has it and get a title.

I'll sell you mine for $180!!!!!!! :D :D :D

I was a little frustrated by the lack of depth in the book. It does, however, have a lot of nice pictures.

Just to throw my 2 cents worth into the fray, if you want to learn how to do the sheet metal/body, fender/paint thing, you need to look for a book that is geared towards the automotive repair/restoration hobby. Add 2 or 3 books such as an I&T manual, shop manual, parts catalog, and yes, the owners manual for your tractor, and you will have everything you need that is in printed form. However, none of that printed material will be of much use to you until you dig into that tractor and get your hands dirty. Sometimes, even the info gained from the forums is of very little use unless someone with experience is standing beside you and will take the time to show, demonstrate, and explain.
