H M Pulley Finishing?

Hello, I am restoring a 1951 H for the neighbor and was wondering what you guys might use to put a nice finish on the old paper pulleys. This one is basically in good shape, but I want to put a coat of maybe paint or varnish on it to give it a fresher look. I have seen some at shows that were medium to dark brown or maybe black in color that looked nice. Any input would be appreciated!

I put several good coats of canola oil on mine. It darkened it a bit and looks great. I personally don't think a whole lot about the black painted ones, but ain't my tractor so do as you please.

Just keep in mind that if he ever wants to use that pulley for its' intended purpose (power a belt), you don't want to put paint on it. That being said, I've had thoughts of using a sort of "faux" wood finish on a paper pulley. Make it look look a fine piece of OAK furniture.

If I were restoring an H I would go on and have Paper Pulley's Inc redo it also. It will have new paper and new metal rings and rivets on both sides.

What about coating the paper pulley with Linseed oil to keep the water out.? I would think the linseed oil would soak in and dry.
