221 engine help Farmall 460

Hello all,
We recently hauled home a Farmall 460 and saved it from the scrapper. Extra engine and all of the trimmings and pieces as the tractor was in more than one piece. The original engine is stuck. The one in the tractor, we dis assembled for inspection and found the rings stuck bad. I am trying to find out the engine in the tractor is stamped C-221 but has stepped and cupped pistons, where the old original engine has only
the stepped piston. Original eng #12301 serial.
The good eng is 45379 serial. Any help greatly appreciated. thanks

Well, the original 460 had stepped pistons and apparently some one put in fire crater style pistons in the other. When IH came with the 706 they used the fire crater design for better effeciency and were using that design for replacement in 221 engine and most of their engines if you so desired. One thing though, they used less spark advance with crater style as it changed the rate of combustion. The first 706 tractors used a 25 degree advance distributor which was to be timed at full throttle to 22 degrees advance, but they soon changed to a 22 distributor and had a gasoline engine improvement package that also came with a new distributor. Put several pkgs in 706. I guess I never did put crater type pistons in a 221 until I used Hy Capacity sleeve set after I "retired".

Pete & LN, thanks for the replies. Some further inspection and the high serial number block does not have any sleeves. I will get some pictures tommorow and post them here. Again thanks for the valuable help here. I am a heavy equipment mechanic. This is our 1st IH restore.

The sleeveless C221 most likely came out of a combine. The other difference you will find is the sleeveless block will not have threaded holes in the back of the block. You will need to use longer bolts with nuts.

When changing piston style you have to make sure that your head will work with the new pistons. Early heads work only with the stepped pistons. They are flat over about 1/2 of the piston and then the rest is combustion chamber. The combustion chambers on the later heads start to go up at angle near the edge of the piston and have the necessary clearance for the Fire Crater pistons.

if that tractor was in scio ohio it was sold to me and guy backed out on deal we had. it is supposed to have a 301 combine engine in it and the original 221 was the motor that was took out or that is what i was told. i was supposed to pick it up after thanksgiving but he sent my money back and let yall have it.

wasnt gonna restore it was gonna pull it. how bad of shape was the motor in when you got it. he told me it was a good running engine but sit up a year or so. it is hard to take someones word these days about stuff

its no spring chicken. motor needs alot of attention. currently tore down to bare block. It is a 221 solid block from a 303 combine. i'll hone and new rings and it will run.

so he lied to me about it being a 301 out of a combine. it came with a 221 why would his dad put another 221 in it. he said he saw it come off a 715 combine

Well so whats the problem? your beating a dead horse here. I have the tractor. You said you bought another one. I am already tired of hearing
you bash a fellow on my post. This is supposed to be a place where people
share information about farm equipment.

well how would you like to take the word of someone that is 600 miles away from you and he tells you what he will do and the price and then he doesnt do it and tells you that you can get the tractor in pieces and put it back together. i was told his dad bought a 301 out of a 715 combine and that was what was in it. if i would have got it and it would have had a 221 in it like you say is in it then you would be pisses to. i was gonna get it but i changed my mind when he said it would be in pieces and i am 600 miles away. im glad you got it and you right there close so you can get what pieces you didnt get when you got the tractor. i was buying it to pull with and he lied to me and that is what i am upset about. i would have had 2300 in that tractor with a stock engine in it. and he said it was a good running engine and you say it is wore out. you wouldnt like it either if you was done like he done me and donet say you wouldnt. why cant people just be honest with you these days. and he said you was gonna use the tractor for parts and put a 301 in a 560 you had and on here you say that is the first farmall you ever owned.

Hey I understand your point completely, Seems we both got a different story. only thing I know for sure is that there is no c-301 engine here and that motor would have never run in the condition that it is in now.
