What do Farmall model #'s mean?

I was once total many model numbers refer to----
First or second and maybe third diget H.P.
Last diget-- number of cylinders.
Examples--
1066--106 hp/ 6 cylinder
1468--146hp/8 cylinder
806--80 hp/6 cylinder
656--65 hp/6 cylinder
I know hp is not exact but is in the ballpark. Anything to this theory?

That was more the Cub Cadets than farm tractors--1066 was 125, 856 was 95, 826 was 92, 706 depends on which engine was in it.

Farmall 340: three bottom plow ~34 hp four cylinder
Farmall 460: four bottom plow ~46 hp - the first six cylinder engine for IH
Farmall 560: five bottom plow ~60 hp - the first six cylinder engine for IH
these were produced from 1958 through 1963
This info from IH literature and a check on the tractordata dot com web site will show close to these figures looking at what is claimed and the test results.
Many breeds of tractors - I seem to recall reading on this site - at one time probably used some type of designation for numbered series that a common person could figure things out, then...?????

Did we forget the WK 40 I don't know why they called the 340-460-and 560 that but i think if your going to plow you should think about 2 3 and maby 4?? Bud.

The numbers were meant to show relative size only...

Going by your system:

300 = 30HP, 0 cylinders... ???

Starting with the 06 series, the last number did reflect the number of cylinders in the engine, mostly...

Then you have the 3388, 3588, 3788... All of them had 6-cylinder engines.

So many exceptions.

There wasn't really any consistent system used at any given time.

I believe the 1468 could be had originally in either 6 or 8 cylinder. The numbers indicated relative size only. Example the 200 became the 230 which became the 240 which later became a 400+ (405 I think). All were a light weight 2-14 plow tractors with 18 to about 28 horsepower. There was an earlier 400 that was an updated M that had around of 50 horsepower.

To confuse things a little more. For few years you could buy some of the numbered ones in Farmall or International models.

(quoted from post at 16:47:21 11/29/10) Example the 200 became the 230 which became the 240 which later became a 400+ (405 I think). All were a light weight 2-14 plow tractors with 18 to about 28 horsepower.

404 was the next one in the "C" series.
