New gas cap for H

I just received one of those new gas caps for my Farmall H
that were sent out on a warranty issue. My question is: why
do they have a warning stamped on them regarding
pressure? I thought these had vent holes for the old tractors
that don't have fuel pumps and that need to be open to
atmospheric pressure. Any ideas? What am I missing here?

Thanks.

Harold

Harold, In a perfect world and for the application the new caps are designed for you are correct. The cap is vented so the fuel tank can empty due to gravity flow. The caution I believe is for the rare times that the cap for some reason would become clogged and pressure would build up in the tank. I was using a Massey Fergerson tractor one time when that was the case and the tractor stopped running. In fact the pressure had built up to the point the fuel was being forced out of the tank where the upper and lower tank halves were seamed together. The new caps are an attempt to limit liability I'm sure in case of an accident and it is always safer to open a fuel cap slowly anyhow, Hal.

They are being replaced as a recall, not a warranty issue. Whether or not a tractor has a fuel pump does not enter into determining the eligibility for the replacement cap. The few tractors that use a non-vented cap along with a separate vent do not qualify for the recall.

The law suits that precipitated the replacement of the fuel caps on most dealt with pressure building up inside the fuel tank because of plugged or restricted vents. The location of the fuel tank causes a lot of heating of the fuel in the tank resulting in the fuel being vaporized. If the vent(s) could not release enough of the vaporized fuel, pressure would build up in the tank. Removing the fuel cap causes a loss of tank pressure which in turn causes more fuel to vaporize. The escaping fuel vapor led to many fires. The new caps have two vents instead of one and came with a warning sticker that needs to be applied next to the fuel cap.

I was thinking recall and typed warranty. Senior moment, I
guess. More likely a brain fart. Sorry for that. Thanks for
the detailed explanation, however. I appreciate your time
and effort.

This puts my mind at ease. Thank you so much for your detailed explanation. It is comforting to me to know that the cap is vented, as it should be on my particular tractor. Now, after your kind response, plus others, I understand the basis of this recall and feel that I have a proper and safe fuel cap installed on my precious tractor.
