Hi all
I was running my 424 today spliting wood with my pto driven spliter the tractor ran out of gas just before it died it had two really good backfires. I re fueld it and it now will not start. it is getting fuel as I have checked all of that and I checked compression and that is good tried pull starting as well. it sounds like the tractor has jumped time when I am turning it over. Is it possible for it to jump time after areally good backfire occurs? Thanks

check to see if you are getting gas to the plugs. if not check the ventura in the carb. sometimes a backfire will crack it and it wont get gas

Yes.
Check to see if the distributor is turning when cranking. If not it will need to have parts taken off until the broken pieces are discovered.
Put #1 piston in compression stroke (thumb over the spark plug hole and crank in short bursts till the thumb is blown past. Then align the timing marks for TDC without going past. The rotor should now be pointing directly at the #1 cap tower connection. If not it is off time. Jim
