Guess I just had to have another project. Picked up this '50 H for scrap price after seeing it sit in a yard for the past 5 years. Full of oil and antifreeze, muffler covered, engine seized. Have put ATF in cylinders, and will have to see if it works. If I could get it free, wouldn't the rings be stuck anyway, making a rebuild necessary, correct? Just needing someone's thought on this.

In the early 90"s my boss at the weld shop took a 77 oliver on trade for some work he did.

Engine was stuck. We soaked it with everything you can think of to get it loose. We drug it around the yard about once a week to try to get it free. After a couple of months he hooked up a sparkplug to hydraulic pressure to get the piston to move a little. Drug it again and it broke free. We got it started.

We reversed the controls ,put a forklift on the back and about 1500 lbs of weight on the front end and have been running as a forklift everyday since. It has gone thru 4 starters and 2 clutches since then but the engine has never been touched. Uses alittle oil but not enough to tear the engine apart.


This is just one case. Not a rule that they all will work this way.
 
Thanks for commenting. I'd be happy to post a picture, but need some instruction on that. Is there a place on this site that tells you? And yes, there is a "wife" story that goes with this. It turned out OK. We're still living together.
 
Thanks for all replies. Patience is not one of my strong points, but I can see that this tractor is going to put whatever patience I have to the test. I'll post a picture,but need to learn how.
 
If its been setting for that long pull the head and pan and then figure how you are going to get the pistons pressed out. I would remove the engine so you can remove the crank that will make it easier to get the sleeves and pistons out cause in the end thats what you are going to do.
 
Well if you filled the cylinders not just put a small amount in then if let sit long enough the rings will in fact free up since the rings are also what is holding the engine from turning over. Once freed up and you get it running the combo of the heat from running it and the ATF that will still be in and around the rings will in fact free up the rings in a short time. I have had very few if any after I have freed them up use much if any oil or smoke badly after say the frist hour of running. Yes when first started some smoked so bad that if you walked away from them you could not find them for 10 minutes unless there was a stiff wind
 
Bruce jack up the rear end of the tractor and run a pipe or a shaft through both rear wheels and then set it pipe on blocks and put the tractor in high gear and fill the cylnders with ATF and walk away and when the rear tires are back on the ground the motor is free. Here is one for you gentlemen (hopefully the pic posts OK). It is a 1939 H and was backed in to this shed in the early 1980"s and had the water drained and the carburator ran dry. It was stuck when I picked it up in late September of this year. I pulled the valve cover and checked valves, then put Krawl penetrating oil in the cylinders. I pulled the starter and worked the flywheel with a prybar (gently) until the motor broke free. Coolant, fuel, and a tug from a 2096 and it was running like a top. I know that they don"t all go like this, but there are more variables than just how long it has been sitting.

Now days my wife just asks how many are you bring in and are they our or are they Eds and yours. Ed is my partner. He has the $$ I have the know how to get them running again
 
I broke a Ford engine loose on a NH swather a couple of years ago. It had a stuck valve and bent a pushrod. Runs good now.
