706 Reverse problem

Last winter the HI-LO shift fork broke on my 706 while I was plowing snow. We pulled the top cover on the range transmission and replaced the fork, then adjusted the clutch, dump valve and transmission brake per the manual. For some reason, it will only go into reverse about half the time. It goes into the other gears fine, no gear clashing or anything. I tried adjusting the thing at the top of the linkage that looks like a tie rod end, but no luck. Is it likely that I have to adjust the rod with the threaded yoke that hooks into the cam pivot shaft? Or is there some other problem? Right after we put the top cover back on we looked in though the cover plate on the left side of the tractor and the reverse fork seemed to work fine.

If it shifts into high range and low range like it should then most likely the problem is under the cover and not linkage adjustment.

Likely causes are a broken/missing roller on the reverse arm or too much play where the arm pivots in the cover. Less likely causes are a broken reverse shift fork or broken thrust washers on the reverse idler shaft.

No- Still has the original 706 set-up. Also, the park-lock on my tractor is rather unusual. Instead of having a lever with a knob like other 706's, it has a casting with a "V" in it that you hook with your toe to engage the pack-lock.

That park lock is just an original, early un-updated one. The Owner's and repair manuals for my 806 show it and mention an update kit to the lever style.
