how to determin the production year of my 460?

Where do i find the engine serial number on a 460 gas? i'm assuming that's what is needed to figure out the year it was made? also what were the production numbers/years so i know when it was made. Thanks!
 
They're not authoritative (i.e.; there a mistakes throughout their base, but serial numbers are generally pretty good), but external_link is a good place for a quick look. A link to their page on the 460 is below.

Their notes reminded me of the rear-end issues with the 460. I don't have the book at hand that would give me the details I'd like (like what the stamping was), but it sticks in my mind that IH stamped a suffix on the serial number after they had done the upgrade to the rear end.

Some argue that the 460 and 560 were the beginning of the end for IH.

As far as the serial number, when you find it, the numbers in the table are for the first number produced in the year given. Also, once you find it and check against the tractordata table, you can check it also against the table on this site -- there's a link to the left under Research and Info
 
Chassis serial is on a plate on the right side of the clutch housing. If missing the engine serial won't match. How far off it is, someone else will have to tell you. You can look at casting numbers on most of the castings in the form of 5*15*D, May 15, 1958. You can probably tell the year from those, although some castings may sit from weeks to a few months before being used. The 460 was made from 1958-1963, year letter is D--J. I was skipped.
