how hard is it to fix a tachometer on a 460 Farmall

The tachometer on my "new" 460 does not seem to be working, it always just stays in the same position. how hard of a fix is this and what does it require? is it a spendy fix? also the ta on it is working so thats a plus since i thought it wasn"t!

Well it isn't that simple but the fix will be. First, is it the head that failed or the cable or the drive. nits easy to determine by removing the cable from the back of the head and running the engine. If the cable turns and is quiet and smooth then its the head. If it doesn't then its the cable or drive. Now if the cable is broken see if its the housing or if the head is frozen up. If the head is ok remove the cable from the drive and see if the drive is turning. If the drive is turning and the head isn't frozen or broken then replace the cable and housing. After the replacement of the cable and housing run the engine and make sure it runs free and smooth. stop engine and install the tach head. run engine again and see if it works. If not replace the head. Happy Thanksgiving

There are places that repair them, Bates Corp subcontracted mine to some repair place, I have read they no longer handle them. New ones are available--Steiner Tractor Parts has them for $99, I don't know how close to original they are, or how dependable. They sound too cheap to me.

"Head" refers to the tach. If you are aboard a ship or boat, be careful when trying to repair a head.

I am so appreciative of finally talking to someone with a sense of humor. :) and I am not being a smart mouth . Thanks for the levity. Happy Thanksgiving to both of you.
