Farmall 460, new to me and i've got ????'s need help please

Just bought a Farmall 460 at a farm sale today. It's a nf, ps, fh, ta (it's not working right), tach shows 9,000 sum hours but it runs great so i'm assuing the engine has been overhauled at some point. Paint is good and it was a ONE OWNER! (i'm most excited about that part!) My first of MANY questions is what am i looking at as far as repairing the torc amplifiar? general cost atleast a ball park figure. also will it hurt the tractor to operate it with the ta not functioning? THANKS! in advance and i'm sure i'll have many more questions for you guys!

if its working ok use it like that you dont need a ta. there only there for a short heavy pull.

I have a 460 with a good TA, I love it for baling - when a slug of hay comes up, pull the TA and slow right down on the fly.

Never had to fix one, but I'd get it fixed if I were you. Handy in all sorts of situations. I'd probably pass up a non-TA Farmall.

I bought a 460 diesel and i think the ta is the best feature on the tractor?? With the right oil why is it only good for a heavy load for a short time?? You can't use it to split gears and get whatever gear/speed you want to work in all day?? Bud.

The TA is essentially a planetary gearset used to make a downshift. Planetaries in automatic transmissions, even Allisons used behind diesel truck engines, are usually good for well over 100,000 miles [some to 200,000-300,000 miles] if properly used and maintained.

So why would a TA be "only good for a heavy load for a short time" ?? I understand the mechanics of the TA, but I don't understand your conclusion.

I think you're looking at around $2000+ to pay someone to replace the TA. You can do it yourself much cheaper, but it requires removing large sections of the tractor (aka "splitting").

Splitting is heavy and dangerous work, and without the right know-how and at least some of the proper equipment, you're looking at a disaster.

If the tractor runs and drives with the TA lever ahead, it will run FOREVER like that.

Lots of tractors being sold these days have TA problems. People equate that to the TA being some sort of "weak link" or "flawed" feature of the tractor.

Nothing could be further from the truth. These tractors are 25+ years old, and served the bulk of their useful lives as primary power on farms. Used day in and day out at full capacity.

The TAs are JUST PLAIN WORE OUT from normal use.

Replace the TA now, and it will last you the rest of your life. You little hobby farmers who run the tractor over a few acres a couple weeks a year will never run the tractor enough to wear out the TA again even if you're only in your 30's.

well my conclusion is the same one that international harvester had when they designed it. no was was it intended to be worked 12 hrs a day. it was designed for field work when you got into a tough spot you didnt have to stop and down shift. then when through the tough spot you just go back to direct drive. same thing when baling. this applies to tractors from super W6TA, farmall MTA to ih 660. then when the 706 came out you can work those how you like.thats what i know and what the old ihc mechanics taught.

The main reason using it in TA under heavy load will shorten the life is that you must remember the whole secret to the unit is the overrunning clutch. This consists of a ramp with rollers that are forced into the wedge of the ramp. The harder you force those rollers from heavy loading the sooner they groove deep enough into ramp so they cannot move enough to securely grip the carrier to prevent it from rotating backwards. When carrier rotates opposite direction from input shaft, the out put shaft stand still so, no drive. Of course the planetery gears wear more also when heavily loaded but they are normally not the first parts to failure. They will usually last two or three ramps and carriers. Good quality gear lube like HY-tran will minimize the wear and allow those rollers to keep moving freely longer.

Matt:

I'm not familiar with the 460, but if it's anything like a 350 Utility the torque amplifier must be adjusted strictly by the book. If it isn't working, a proper adjustment may improve its attitude and save you the headache and expense of splitting the tractor. And it's almost free!

Sorry rustred and with respect, that is incorrect, TAs are just as happy in direct as in low. They break least when switched between modes quickly (no easing it in/out) and worked often. They are solid components. Jim

Hey thanks for all the replies guys! When i picked up the tractor and actaully got to drive it around i tested the ta using the brakes and it turns out that it does work! thank the lord! i have a lot more questions but i'll post then under a new topic header. thanks again!
