Guys getting rid of an 450 gas and he claims it runs alright but needs work. He says either it goes for scrap price or it goes for scrap. what is a decent offer. Scrap price?

-Cole

It sounds like that is all he wants. The tractor junk yard is paying around $700, but for scrap it would be more like $500. Well, maybe more. I heard scrap up here was $170, but a whole tractor might bring a little more. I would put the weight around 6000.

Your seller sounds like an idiot. What's he gonna do? Drive it over to the metal re-cycler and request payment? He won't get much. You should follow him and offer 10% more. You will probably pay $220.

On the other hand, if he removes the tires and rims, sells the radiator separately, drains the fluids, and negotiates a price with the owner of the yard or his buyer, he will probably get more than twice that much and have tires he might be able to sell later.

Pricing is also contingent on the metal market and location. I just scrapped three tons of prepared cast iron for $250/ton in eastern MA. That was negotiated and not some low-ball standard offer that most schmucks accept because they don't know any better. It's all a matter of experience.

You are probably looking at 5500 lbs of metal. You will have to "size" up the tractor owner to see if he knows what he is doing. You will also need to know if he is going to do the prep and whether he can load a stripped tractor on a truck or trailer.

If it runs, it is worth a minimum $800, and if it has decent, useable tires front and rear, $1,300 to $1,500 is not unreasonable.

A guy did that exact thing here in CT last year with a H drove it right over the scale, and on to China...

People like that shouldnt be allowed to own antique tractors. I would buy it just to save it from the scrap yard. You should be able to get it for $500 easy.

Cole: The owner may be aware of the leaky radiator, missing grille, bent fan blades, loose steering, bent front rims with car tires, front wheel bearings last greased in 1963, seaping water pump and leaky carb, broken exhaust manifold bolted to a cracked head, block that has been JB welded together, slipping clutch, trans that pops out of gear, worn out brakes, rusted out rear rims with mismatched weather checked tires, a drawbar that has been welded five times, dead generator, rusted, dented gas tank, missing hydroulic pump..

The old tractor does run, and it has a new gas cap!!

The owner may be a very honest person, and may be asking only what he has determined the tractor to be worth to him.

Talk with the owner, and look that tractor over.. It may be allot better, or,, even worse... You just never know till you check it out yourself.

Happy Tractor Shopping, Ya, Just wondering,,, does this tractor come with a free Turkey?? Happy Thanksgiving BDT

I would love to buy a 450 for what they are worth rather than what mis-informed and uneducated bidders run them up to on an auction.

A 450 weighs in at about 6000 lbs., around here you can haul them in whole for $195.00 a ton tires and all. I think I would be buying it if you could get it for scrap price.

Amen. You too BDT. I think we have all bought the "deal" and then found out it wasn't so great.

With that said, on photo only/sight unseen tractors I am not afraid to flirt with the $500 mark at all. You could EASILY part/scrap it out for more than that.
