Farmall M transmission

My son has a 44 M that chewed up third gear,,, I bought a 46 parts tractor for scrap iron price; but sadly, the same gears are junk in that one also...

These old tractors have done their share of work, and it don't suprise me to see these simular failures in their old age.... I could chase down another basket full of parts and put a good transmission together for him; then, at least he would know what shape it's in...

Are transmission gear failures on the old M FarmAll an "often seen" problem; more so than other ailments??

Yes a lot of them have 3rd and 4th gears well used. Which gear is needed 3&4 double gear for the counter shaft? 2&3 sliding gear or both? May have what you need.

I don't know how much you wanna spend but on ebay there was 2 for sale. one was a complete running one but the other was just a frame with complete rearend and factory widefont. It would make a good start for a puller. had no engine or seat or sheet metal. These were both in the same listing and I think he said he would be willing to seperate em. Couldn't tell you where it was located though

As D Slater indicates, they are used in that gear more than any other. In my experience there is probably original gear oil in 1/3 of the fence row tractors. Let D Slater know the number of teeth on each, And if he has them, you can depend on his judgment and honesty. Jim

My Son plopped the cover back on to drive it to the shed.. I will have to run over there and plop the cover, pull the drain plug and look closer at the entire transmission.. It would be best to do a complete tear-down from what he described..But,, I bought him all three manuals for the tractor, so we should be able to match part numbers if We don't do the complete tear-down first... I will get a parts list together for the gears.

Jim, I agree with the sadly common lack of maintenance.... And the neat owners manuals that came with those tractors! I have read them just to enjoy the little cartoons..
