Modified steering on an A

Found this modified steering on an A up here in Northern Ontario. Looks like an OK mod.

This is an 1946 A, but that sure looks like a Super A engine by the hydraulic pump location. The A had no hyd unit.

It's kinda weird that the designer replaced one worm and sector with another. Perhaps it has a higher ratio for easier steering. Have to wonder how well the seal near the pitman arm will hold up. I'll bet the IH seal was leaking and that is why the steering was replaced.

But we've been shown this tractor and the one Dr. Bert modified one page ago. That was a M with a Schwartz wide front. It seems to me if one is going to mess around with steering, why not do it with power?

It's so easy with hydrostatic components. All you need is a used four port "hand pump", an actuator for around $100 from Surplus Sales, a hydraulic power source, and misc hose and fittings. Now you have something of value in an age where even the smallest Kubota has PS as standard equipment.

Well, I am not complaining. To each his own. I just retrofitted a W-400 with hydrostatic steering for about $300. I needed to clear space on the left side of the tractor where the 6' long drag link gets in the way.

Hydraulics were available on the A. Some late B's had the mounting provision on the block.

Hydraulics, from the factory, were NOT available on the A. They debuted on the Super A when it was introduced in late 1947.
