coolant question

What do you guys consider a "passing grade" for your coolant? I tested my tractors yesterday. One was -40 and the other three were -10. Of course the one with the -40 test is the one that is inside an isulated garage. I live due East of St. Louis and am kinda leary about the -10 ratings. One of the -10 rating tractors I just refilled with Shell coolant 50/50 mix. Kinda ticked me off that the brand new concentrate mixed 50/50 was only -10 rating. I am thinking about removing about a quart of coolant from each of the three (or what ever I can suck out out of the top of the radiator) and re-filling with straight concentrate. Do you think that would get them to atleast -20 or am I wasting my time and money and need not worry? The tractors are Farmall 300 (-40 rating), IH 300U (-10 rating), Farmall B (-10 rating), and a Farmall A (-10 rating).

I don't buy the ready mix. I buy the raw antifreeze and mix it 50/50. You may be able to drain out some of the coolant and add raw antifreeze. Then you would need to run the engines to get it mixed. It very seldom gets that cold here in the mid-atlantic area. It did in 1994 was down to -17 F. Hal

your kinda on the weak side with -10. a 50/50 mix would make the strength good to -34. but with this premix stuff not even sure what its good for. i would get them down to at least -30 to be safe and let the chemicals in antifreeze do their job.i would drain and add 1/2 gal. straight antifreeze to the weak ones.

All depends on where you are at and the common and record cold for your area. Where I am in Missouri -10 will do just fine 99% of the time and if it does get lower it does not stay that way long enough to hurt much if any thing

Not likely that the concentrate is defective, unless it came from China or somewhere -- you might try a different gauge. Also if you did not drain the block, you have a lot of the old antifreeze still in it. Depends on what the old antifreeze tested. If you flushed it, you have to get all the old water out to get an accurate reading.

-10 will get slushy but not really freeze here in MN with -30 temps. Start the engine & the slush will be liquid again.
IF you can drain out some & add straight anti-freeze (¼-½) quart then run the engine to mix it up you should be good to go.

I should have specified that I did not by the pre-mix. I bought the concentrate (raw) and mixed it 50/50. Won"t be buying the Shell kind ever again, that"s for sure!!
