Best way to time a farmall H?

(quoted from post at 20:50:07 11/18/10) Is there a way to see the fly wheel?

Do you have a manual or not ?????? I do not think you time an H from the flywheel.

Why are you timing it anyhow???? Distributor out...overhaul????

You have get on #1 on compression at TDC and have the distributor fire at #1 tdc or very slightly after.

(quoted from post at 21:00:08 11/18/10) Ya ive had it apart and put it back together and it with hit a few times then it just dies thought it might be in the timing.

What did you have apart???

How have you been timing it????

I have had it running since it took the distributor out but i took it apart and painted it and now it will hit a few times and die. Ive been timing it just like you mentioned.

Grab a digital timing light with a tach built in .

Set it at wide open throttle and turn the dist while watching the tach , lock it down when you get the highest rpm .

First make sure every thing is new , points, cond , plugs ,wires etc etc.

This is how we set them while on the dyno.
For the best results set the timing the same way but under load on the dyno .

Did you take the dist apart ?

If you did , did you put the exact same screws back in that hold the points plate ?

If you used differnt screws they hit the advance weights causing all kinds of problems.

The side of the dist has that stud that a wire is hooked to ! That stud "can not" touch the metal of the dist, it will act like a ground.

I guess i should first ask do you have the dist installed correct ?

Static time it...Bring #1 up to tdc. There should be 3 total marks on the front pulley. Two are very close together, and another mark is off on its own. Ignore the one off on its own. It's for greasing the pilot bearing. Line the timing pointer up with the second of the two marks that are close together. Point your rotor so it's firing at #1 on the dist cap. Put your cap back on, and leave your dist loose. Turn on the ignition switch. Take a test light and hook one end to ground and one end to the terminal on the of the side of the distributor. Turn your dist body in the direction of the rotor rotation so that the test light just blinks out. Now turn the rotor body in the opposite direction, against the rotor rotation, to where the test light just blinks on. Lock down the distributor...Static timed. Assuming your points are in good working condition and set properly. Shawn

The timing marks are on the front pulley, not on the flywheel. No need to see the flywheel unless you are looking for worn starter ring gear teeth.

Tom you're right. The TDC mark on the front pulley for static timing is the first of the double marks(in the direction of crankshaft rotation). Fell asleep at the wheel.... take care, Shawn
