Posi rearend on M ?

Anyone know if there was ever a factory or add-on limited slip in the rearend of a Farmall ? The SM I have sure seems like it does ! It will rarely slip only one wheel, and if it does , it will only go around a revolution or so til the other wheel joins in, regardless of the terrian or mud,ice ,chains on or not. The tires are liquid filled and have 1 IH wieght per side. Just wondering,it is definetly not a problem ! My SH s are nothing at all like that SM, and spin out pretty easy. Thanks

I would take the top off the rear-end before I drove it in road gear! Most likely you have differential issues.

I never saw or heard of a posi traction in any of these tractors. Have seen several differentials worn out and you usually notice that by tractor wants to go straight ahead when you turn steering wheel, especially under slick conditions. Also, make noise when one wheel is turning faster than other like in turns. On a super with factory disc brakes you can take brake off, pull bull pinion shaft and get a look inside of diff.

an M will have dramatically more traction than the SH. My guess is that if it is not making noise, and if you had it on dry ground and locked one wheel to make a pivot turn, and no bad things happened, that it is fine. They have never had limited slip differentials or posi of any type. Nor have I heard of any after market kits to do so.
Differential locks are found on later tractors only. Jim

Let me tell you something. Take that tractor and pull it. There is nothing wrong with the rear end. The rear end is still tight from the factory another words is has very little use on it. There are ways to make posi or limited slip in the farmalls, I have two, one in a "C" and one in an "H". They work great. Good Luck with it. Bob

Naw, One thing I am sure of is that it isn t a part failure issue. My father and grandfather bought this one at auction in 63, and it has always been this way,and after thousands upon thousands of hours in the fields and down the roads it never failed or made any noises at all. I thought maybe someone had added something in there such as a limited slip,as the tractor had many other M&W parts on it when they got it. I own it now, and don t plan on tearing her apart as it is quiet as a mouse in the rear. Our 886 had a manual diff lock, but I never heard of a letter series have any type of locker, anyone else ever hear of such a thing? Thanks

Thanks Bob Z , How do you go about making a posi on an H or C ? If it isnt too terribly involved I may consider doing that to SH as it loses grip to one wheel so easily and aggrevates the heck outta me ! I don t want to fill the tires and have one wieght per side on back now already. How much more would 2 or 3 wieghts help you figure? And yes, there is a DRAMATIC difference in traction between the SH and the SM that I have !

Quite often a driver can apply the brake to the wheel that is slipping which will transfer all power to the wheel that does have traction. This method will usually get you off of the ice or maybe out of a mud hole, but you sure wouldn't want to do that while plowing so that you could make it to the other end of the field. Sometimes this method does not work at all, because neither wheel has sufficient traction.

The British built B-450 was equipped with a diff-lock. I've always wondered if those parts would go into a M through 660. I sure would like to take a look at a B-450 parts book. Heck, I would buy the book if I could find one. I've had an alert on eBay for several years.

Farmall m rear ends that are road graders have a differential lock on them. Not sure if they all did but I know some of them do.
