340 IH gas, year 1959

my "59 has live power. runs off a pump on the front of the tractor (ring gear driven?). I think there was an option for a belly pump as well - always thought that was live power too.

NO, transmission driven pumps were used in the non-super letter series, and W series far as I know, that is all. Your engine is a succesor to the Super A and C engine, those tractors always had an engine driven pump.

Not so.

My 340U has a transmission driven pump. It's even referred to as such in the manual

The Case IH parts lookup site lists one engine driven pump, 2 transmission driven pumps, 2 transmission driven power steering pumps and 2 transmission driven power steering adapters.
