M Rear Wheel Bearing lube?

Restoring an M: How do the outer wheel bearings get lubricated? Do I put lube in the axles housing when I put them back in? Do they get lube from the rear frame?

There is a grease zerk at the end of the housing that needs ~19 pumps before running (preferably with the wheel rotated 1/4 turn between groups of 3 pumps or so). After that once a week if worked, or as the manual indicates. If a show tractor, once a year! It will not squirt out of the end cap. Jim

After the initial lube the number of gun pumps shoulD be changed to 4 for each normal lubing. Jim

I would be real careful about putting 9 pumps of grease in that bearing.

I remember being 10 years old and greasing our "H" before mowing and pumped up the wheel bearings on it, blew out the seals on both axles. My old man jumped my arse about that -something about the tractor being 30 years old and it only took me 5 minutes to cause its first major oil leak.....

The 9 pumps assumes a clean lightly oiled fresh install with grease being put in it for the first time. Jim
