Add a block heater to an H

I read that there is a plug on the engine by the top radiator hose connection you can connect the heater output to. I found the plug, but is it ahead of the thermastat, can"t tell for sure? Will it work ok here? Also have a frozen block drain plug that the previous owner beat up a little probably trying to remove. What"s my best method to get the plug out? Is there any other location that can be used? Thanks for any ideas.

There should be a drain in the bottom of the radiator. If there is that should be low enough to drain engine and all.

I can't say for sure about the plug on the thermostat housing, but I think the circulation of the water will be better if you connect at the temperature guage fitting. The best way I know of to free up that block drain plug is by firing up the torch and heating the block around where the plug is, although you might try welding a big nut onto that plug. The heat from the welding might just be enough to free it up, plus you'll have a nice big nut to put your wrench on.

you should drill a hole below the thermostat and tap it out to 3/8ths pipe thread and put in the proper nipple-- the heat from the heater will go back into the head where it belongs-- suck your cold water out of the plug behind the carb.good luck!

I was looking at the temperature gauge and sensor and wasn't sure how to take it out. Does the line from the sensor to the gauge disconnect or do you have to take out the gauge and rotate it while unscrewing the attachment to the block? I couldn't see how the gauge came out of it's support either, was a bit dark when I looked and didn't spend much time looking though.

My question is why would you need a block heater for an H. Ours starts down in the -20 degrees outside in the winter . Yes I know there are places colder also. Just thought maybe he was going to the south pole or such.

The block heater serves two purposes really. A pre-warmed engine pretty guarantees the engine will start, plus, a pre-warmed engine will recieve MUCH LESS wear during those first few seconds before the oil pressure has had time to build up.
