Power Steering

just to throw this out there: i heard that there was friction additives in type f oil, so it was not a good idea in power steering, or to add to engine. maybe someone can confirm.

Some years ago it was not uncommon for manufacturers to "spec" Type F for use in certain hydraulic or hydrostatic transmissions systems so it sure as heck ain't gonna hurt an old PS system!

Myself, I'd simply dump in some UTF.

I guess I should mention that the original hoses on mine finally let go after how many years? and started making a mess, so I installed 2 new hoses, and refilled the system with type F. That was at least 5 years ago and I've done nothing but use it since then.

Its not so much that there are friction additives in the type F. Its that there are slip additives in other tranny fluids such as the dextron/mercon III. They are to smooth out the shifts in granny's grocery getter so she doesn't get whiplash. The Type F does not have these slip additives (or at least, not as manny) as the Dexton/mercon III. (I could go on as to why some O.E.M.s use Type F over Dextron III, etc. But its not important) Hence, the use of Type F by racers for quicker shifts. The only thing the additives affect are the clutches. In a PS system, nothing to worry about. Not to mention, tranny fluid, has a high level of detergent to keep components clean. So that should be a PLUS in my book for PS.
