300 utility hydraulics

I'm trying to get the hydraulics to work on my 300 utility I just bought. The pump just get hot when it's running, but it makes no noise and I have no hydraulic pressure. I pulled off the lines that go to the pump. The lower hole which I believe is the feed port to the pump had no fluid running out of it when I took off the lines. I took the breather off the top of the resevoir and put some pressure in it with my air hose and fluid came out off the lower hole. Should fluid run out of the lower hole when the lines are pulled off or is there a baffle in there? I put the lines back on and started the tractor. While it was running I put pressure to the breather again and the pump made some noise like it was trying to pump, but I still couldn't lift my fast hitch. Thanks

That's the first issue I tackled with mine. There is a pickup in the reservoir that has a screen on it and mine was collapsed because it was so dirty. It's kind of a pain to get to and that gasket isn't cheap.

Try putting some pressure to that breather port when the engine is running. The 300U system needs to have the line to the pump primed if the fluid level drops too low. You may have lost prime. It only takes about 5 psi and takes maybe 5-10 seconds. When the pump primes you will hear a change in engine sound while it brings the system up to pressure. If it doesn't prime in a minute or so, then it's time to take the reservoir cover off and check the screen. I used a engine hoist to remove the cover on my 300U. It isn't all that heavy (maybe 40-60 lb?), but it's awkward, and you don't want to set it down on a flat surface as you'll crush the screen.
