Cub Transmission Spline Shaft

I have a '49 Cub and I have had the tractor apart to swap the engine and replace all seals and gaskets. Now my PTO does not engage because the transmission spline shaft moves back and forth 1/2 inch. If I try to engage the PTO the shaft is pushed foward. The gears and clutch work fine. What did I do wrong in reassembly?

Yes, Jim is correct. Likely you installed the front transmission bearing backwards. Which allows the shaft to slide back and forth. A common mistake. You"ll have to split it again to fix it.

Haas and Jim,

Thank you. It was the bearing retainer just as you said. I fixed it today and everything works well.
