radiator shutter help

working on little items on my 49' H. The radiator shutter crank / rod is stuck or froze. Any help on how to free it up? how is it made exactly? How does the crank come off from the tractor, etc.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Easiest thing to do is to take the whole apparatus off, by taking the shutter rod off and twisting it out of the crank at the insturment panel. Clean up the threads and spray a high tech lubricant into the crank. Make sure that the crank spins freely and add some Anti-seize to the threads and put it back together. Mine works great now and was frozen up beforehand.

Hope this helps somewhat. Im not good with words lol.

Cole,

Thank you!

so the long rod that goes from the oil filler area to the crank will screw out of the crank body? How does the crank body come off the tractor?

The crank has a collar on the drivers side of the plate and has a pin holding it on the crank body. Clean up the paint/rust to find pin. Drive the pin out. Collar will probably be rusted to crank body gently pry it off. Lots of penetrating oil, patience, and probably some heat. Trying to find that crank is getting harder. I looked at well over 50 H&M Farmalls to find 1 I could use.

Thanks Dean.

This was my grandfather's H. He bought it new in 50, so I am being very careful to keep everything as original as I can.

To the responses - Thank You! I have had all apart, cleaned and back on the tractor. It works!

My question now is the long rod that screws into the crank supposed to have a bend up towards to the crank? mine does - it looks like it was made that way, but the crank seems to get hung up or does not turn free all the way. The shutter works, but I am thinking it should turn more freely.

Anyone have a pic - that might help me too.

Thanks
