Farmall H Govenor.. Idles and then races

My Farmall H idles fine until I put a very small load on it. Even letting out the clutch causes it to race and then it balances out and idles fine. It does this quickly approx. 4 times each interuption. Idle, race idle, race ect. It never stalls during this. Is this the govenor? Is there an adjustment? Thanks Mark.

sounds like you have a gov spring arm with a lot of wear in the spring hole----find a cotter pin just big enough to go through the hole diagnally in front of the spring loop --cut it off short just enough to go through the hole and open it a little that will keep it going for a long time---

Governor spring could be wearing. My M would rev up real fast if I let the clutch out in higher gears, until I replaced the 5 dollar gov spring. My new H does this as well, I just ordered a spring for it too, hopefully it takes care of it like it did on my M.

That little thrust washer that rests on the weights has wear spots in it, this washer has to rotate and what happens is it gets locked on those spots, then it releases and rpm goes crazy till it settles back in. Along with the conbination of worn weight pins, bad roller bearing on the linkage shaft causing binding.

If the washer is all you find, simply flip it over. might not be whats wrong, but its a start to look.

I had the same problem too, found the oil way to the govenor housing was blocked causing it to stick, gasket sealer had been used and covered the hole. Just another thing you can look for, hope it helps.
