856 Clutch Replacement

I was in the field the other day chisel plowing and the tractor stopped dead in the water. I believe my clutch took a dump. Was wondering how much of a pain it is to split the tractor and what I need to look for? Any tips, tricks, etc? Thanks for the help!

A clutch will usually give some warning (slipping, etc,) before it just "takes a dump", but I have seen a clutch disc or two with the center hub twisted out, so I guess it is possible. Splitting an 856 is not a job for the faint of heart.

Thanks for the input. We"ve known its been going out for a while. It has been slipping and I hit some wet ground and it just gave. The RPMS stayed the same and I know I didn"t hear anything shatter. It still drives without a load on it so I"m assuming this could be the only answer. What do you think will be difficult? I have a pair of tractor stands....

If you have the stands, go for it, but please split the tractor on a solid, level, concrete surface, and make sure when you roll it back together that everything lines up perfectly. Using the bolts to pull it together that last 3/4" to 1" or so will do nothing more than warp the new clutch disc beyond salvage.

Not bad at all if you have the stands and a concrete floor. You know that you can put a 14" clutch and pressure plate in that 856. Only thing you will have to change the flywheel. I bought a good used one for 50.00 two years ago and got a clutch and pressure plate for a 1206 or 1256. Just don't buy a heavy duty 14" out of a 66 series tractor then you will have to put a hyd assist on it to push it in.

Flywheel out of a 1206, 1256, 1456, and I am almost sure any 66 series that uses 14" clutches. I think the flywheel that I bought from a salvage yard came out of a 1066.
