Farmall 400 motor fit in a M?

Hello I have a MD that I got from my uncle and he told me that it was converted to gas before he bought it. I checked the casting numbers and serial and it looks like he is right. I was wondering if a motor from a 400 diesel that I found would fit in a MD? And also what other engine options would I have if I want to convert it back to diesel? Any help would be great.
Thanks
Ryan

If you have access to the 400 as a doner, the switch will be pretty easy. There are really no other easy options other than a gas start diesel run engine from an md, an SMD, SMTAD, 400D, or 450D. Engines from the WD6 series will also be similar but may have differing front mounts, depending on the year. Jim

Hello thanks for the info. I thought I read something once that said there might be clutch-flywheel issues with a 400 to m swap. Maybe I was reading about something else though.

There is, you need to use the M flywheel and or a combination of the larger clutch/FW, and very late M or SM Belly pump to assure clearance. Some mix and match is going to be the case.
If you use a late SM stage II or newer engine, it will have a live pump that is far and away better than the Belly pump any way. Jim

There will be several, but each is dependent on what was changed or modified when the gas engine was installed. The parts you have to choose from, and your inventive nature. It is dependent on you more than will it work. There should be no "I can make it work moments. Jim
