I had to have my starter rebuilt for my above tractor and having an issue with the drive hitting the flywheel gear and not engaging the flywheel. The drive is a 12 teeth drive and I think i need a 13 or 14 teeth drive. The starter # is a Delco 1113198. I have been told it is a delco 30 mt starter. Does anybody have any ideas? Please send a private message or post on this site. Thanks Mike

The 656 used two different ring gears on flywheel and pinion gears on starter so you need to match serial numbers or start counting teeth. About 25 years ago one of the mechanics in shop installed wrong drive, it worked but made a lot of noise and I went out and installed correct one at the customers farm.

The manual stated that the teeth on the flywhell had 134 teeth and how can I match the pinion gear to that number of teeth.

Are you sure that the drive OD is not too large to engage the ring gear teeth? You can't rely on tooth count to get the right size OD on the drive gear.

The parts book lists two different drives for diesel starters but one is for the Hydro and the other is for the gear drive. The one for the hydro is a ten tooth with a 32 mm OD on the gear. I did not find any specs for the gear drive transmission drive but I did come up with another ten tooth with a 40 mm OD and a twelve tooth drive with a 46.5 mm OD. The 46.5 mm is the drive that is used on the 30 MT starters used in the 706.

The numbers I came up with for your drive are:
Delco Remy - 1965788
Acurite -3-276
Arrowhead - SDR5116

Thank you for that information. I spoke with a tech specialist at delco and he stated that the proper drive would be a 12 teeth with a 10-12 degree pitch. We are going to try that. I will stay in touch for follow up. Thanks again.
