Farmall H starting issues

Got a farmall h with 12 volt battery. When you hit the starter button it would keep cranking and once you let off it would fire. Never had a tractor do this before and not sure if it a fuel issue or electrical issue. Thanks, andy

My H is the same. Mine has a mag so there is no issue of battery energy being diverted. I think maybe it is just that it is used to being crank started and the 12V battery is turning the starter too fast for the engine to catch up. I just bump my starter button quickly and then let go and that seems to work well.

That can be caused by a number of things. If it has a distributor the starter could be getting weak and pulling to many amps for it to have spark so when you let off you then have the amps/spark. Could be a simple timing issue or could be a problem with just plain weak spark. I would start by making sure you have a good blue/white spark that will jump a 1/4 inch gap if you do not have that then you have a spark type problem

I have heard of this kind of thing before with mags. Being that this tractor is in a 12 volt starting system, it is cranking over two fast, and when you let off of the starter button, it will slow down and fire. Generally this does not occur on a 6 volt system with a mag, because of the slower cranking speed.

You have a wiring issue; the voltage to the ignition is resisted and if there is not a by-pass when using the starter the voltage to the points is not sufficient to fire up the engine. When the starter switch is released the voltage to the points increases and the engine starts.

Im sorry I was thinking that the tractor had a mag and someone just installed a 12 volt system,Your post didnt say,As old said it could be the starter drawing to much voltage,I had a 340 that did the same thing

my Super H does the same thing. The wiring is old and I'm sure it draws to much current due to the resistance in the wiring. mike

If it has battery ignition, and a dropping resistor (ballast resistor), bypassing it for starting with a switch will boost starting voltage allowing an instant start. If the switch is tiresome, a 6 amp diode could be placed in a wire from the starter side of the starter switch, allowing starter level voltage to get to the coil side of the resistor, and then not back feed to the starter (which would fry the wires). If a mag, Putting windings from a 12 volt starter in the 6volt frame will slow it down so that the impulse coupling will work. Jim
