I am trying to find a starter number for a 1942 T6 crawler. I can find the starter number for after 1945 but not prior. I think it is a delco as I have one that bolts up fine but the gear does not contact the ring gear when engaged. The starter gear is not long enough and not big enough around. Is my problem just that I need a different drive? Thanks for any info.

Your "new" starter might be one for a tractor which turns the opposite direction. Starters that are in front of the flywheel spin CCW. (possible)
Rebuilding the starter you have might be the easiest solution. The drive end of the original might be able to be transplanted (with the armature) to the new starter. New drives should be available. good luck, Jim

I do not have an original starter, prior owner put on the one I have but as I said the drive is not contacting the ring gear. Luckily the T6 has the inspection plate in the floor board so I could look in and found what is wrong. It turns the correct direction but when engaged misses the ring gear by one forth inch in front and also to the side. I am told the drives are not identified by number, just the complete starter. Thanks for your help. Just one little detail I have after a complete rebuild and restoration.

Direction of the starter is determined while looking at the drive end. If they are installed from the front they will be CC drives. If installed from the rear they will be CCW drives.

The last time you posted about this I also was not able to find a starter number for one earlier that 1942.

A larger diameter drive may not be that hard to come up with but if it does not travel far enough to engage you probably need a longer drive end frame to make it work.
