Quick Question about wiring a Cub.....

Ok, so I am using the wiring diagram found on the photobucket site everyone on here uses for the 12 volt conversion. By following it, it says to put a "Warning Light" in-line between the alternator (terminal #1), and the On/Off Switch.

Question is: when is the light supposed to come on, and how do I know it is wired up correctly so it will work the way it should.

The light I bought simply has 2 prongs, and the directions on the light package said one was for "Accessory" and the other was the "Ground". I simply hooked the light up in-line between the alternator and the on/off switch using the 2 prongs like the Farmall wiring diagram stated. Is this correct???

Key off, light should be off. Turn key on, light should be on. Start engine, and light should go out when alternator starts charging (as soon as engine catches and gets up to speed). Your car is probably the same way, unless it just has an ammeter.

Your wiring sounds correct.

Read note #4 at the bottom of the diagram. Diode is easier. And you don't have to worry about where you are going to put the light.

Yes on wiring the light. But you need a bulb of the listed specifications.

I already had a hole in the dash of the Cub to mount the light and thought it would give a nice touch as well as cover the hole. The only light I could find at the AutoParts Store was a generic LED light with a plastic "Chrome" bezel. It was $12 too. I asked for a generic old fashioned warning light and they said that is all they had.

When I turn the key on, the light doesn't come on, but I checked the connections with a tester, and I am getting power to it. Since the light package directions says that one terminal is the ground, should I "ground" one terminal and simply put both wires on the other terminal???

One terminal on the bulb will go to the wire on the switch side and the other to the wire headed to the alternator.

Yea, thats what I did although the package says one terminal is for a ground. It just doesn't light up when the key is on; and everything else is hooked up correctly.

You need an INCANDESCENT LAMP the newer LED's have too much resistance and dont allow enough curent flow to excite the alternator !!!!!!!!!!

It should turn on when you turn on the ignition and shes not started. Thats cuz the to ground side (other bat side gets voltage when key is turned to on) gets a ground via the alternator.

It should turn off running if the alt works cuz the voltage on both sides of lamp is same so no current flow means no light

Got it??? John T

Another thing to do is put a 10 ohm 10 watt ceramic resistor(Radio Shack) in parallel with
the LED. The resistor carries plenty of current to excite the alternator and the LED operates normally, "on" when ignition on and engine not
running, "off" when engine starts.

This one has been working great on my 140 with Nissan alt. for a few years. It's a NAPA #TGA10. They may not have it in stock, but I bet they can get it in a day or two. You can't change the bulb, but it gets maybe 5 minutes of on-time a year, if that. It looks correct once it's in. You just need a simple 5/16 inch hole (not positive about drill size.)
