Leaking water Pump Farmall H-Narrow front end

I have a slow leak dripping off the end of the fan belt shaft. They say it needs new packing. Does the radiator need to be removed to do this? Can I unbolt the radiator easily or does the front end have to be disconnected.

Try tightening the packing first, use a 7/8 stubby wrench. I usually remove the grill and radiator to replace the packing, not necessary for those with flexible fingers. The radiator on most models is attached by 2 lower near impossible to get to bolts.

Is it greased well? I put a couple shots of grease in the zerk on mine and the leak stopped.

Im in the process of putting a water pump back on my 48 H. Its used, and Im wondering how much grease I should give it, not knowing what it got before. When I sewt it on its back/base, it growls. When I have it faceing as it should, it dosent.

You cant remove the radiator without removeing the steering post, unless u intend to take off the upper tank on the radiator. Removeing the steering post requires removeing the worm gear on it. U dont want to do that. I took the 2 bolts loose at the bottom, Well, I took loose one bolt, and one nut. Only the nuts were supposed to come off, but on one the stud bolt cake out too. I sled the radiator forward, which wasnt much, but enough to get the pump off with fan attached, minus one blade, That happened when the bearings in the fan part, parted company. I ordered one pump, and got it yesterday. But I didnt think id get it, so I got another comeing with fan which this one didnt have. Guess ill have a spare, as both are used. $50 for one without the fan from one place, and $100 from another with fan. High dollar fan lol

If I remember right 7 years ago I changed the water pump on my SH without removing the radiator. I probably did that with the fan off. One other thing. I replaced it because I could not stop the drip with new packing in various amounts. In other words I had it off more than twice. The new Asian pump leaked also. Replaced the IH seals with NAPA graphite coated string. Still leaked. Gave up and kept the nut tight for a while, the leak eventually stopped. It might have stopped on the original, also, as I had overhauled it as part of my "restoration". Did not leak before I took it off the first time. I guess it's "leave well enough alone", for me anyway.

The packing is wax covered linen/string that will open and rap around the shaft after you loseen the bolt. Not hard to do and was very effective for me.

my 44 H I took the rad. out and used 4 new packing washers and put it back in it still drips so i gave it a pump of grease and it stopped , the rad. is a PITA TO DO BY YOUR SELF

"Removeing the steering post requires removeing the worm gear on it."

HUH? You take out a bolt in the steering ujoint, and the cap on front of the bolster, shaft and all comes right out! Well spins out, the radiator is much harder to get off than that shaft is on an H.

On my dad's 44 H we had to repack the water pump. We also had to take the rad. off of it that wasn't to hard, but when we took off the steering shaft that was stuck had a time in on getting it off. The problem of that was the old paint was stopping it. We got the water pump off and from it leaking it rusted the water pump. So we couldn't get it apart to repack it. Well all in all we had to end up getting a new water pump. I figure better tell you that for if you don't have the money to do it, you might just want to leave it.
