MD Transmission shaft reinstall

MD is back together after new rear main seal install. I decided to put transmission shaft in separately. I see that the whole clutch assembly has to be loosened up and tipped down to get the shaft through the clutch disk splines, but does that cross shaft have to come out too? I'm not wanting to wrestle with that clutch return spring. Sorry, I'm a bit foggy on this. Any answers appreciated.

Some say you can get the drive shaft back in without removing the cross shaft. I guess that is true, as I got mine out with the cross shaft still in there. However, I tried and tried to get it back in; could not and finally gave up and removed the cross shaft. So unless there is some trick I don't know, I would say remove the cross shaft and then it will go back together without a problem.
