Super MTA hood

Just throwing out a search for anyone who might have a hood for a super MTA that is in good condition for sale. Thanks

I've seen $700 dollar SMTA grills on eBay. Never seen a hood but I imagine they are pricy as well. It's a one year item. Your best bet is a MD hood. You will have to relocate the holes but the length and blister location are right. I have two MD hoods but can't see selling them for the typical $100 or less asking price. Not when F-400 and W-400 power steering emblems go for $150.

You could have bought an entire SMTA last Saturday at auction in IA for $575. I'll bet it is now worth $3000 to the new owner. Sometimes you can luck out. Good luck.

The rare stuff is worth the money because it is capable of future appreciation. The run of the mill Farmall may never appreciate until the turn of the next millenium.

i didnt think that a smta grille was any different than any other m...

and how long is a md hood? i didnt think they were the same, but i might be wrong.

I should also add that it may come to pass that the M, MD, and SMTA hoods will be reproduced some day. This availability would be a linear continuation of the smaller Farmall tractors. Working against that thought is the untimely death of the owner of OEM. He had put more reproduction sheet metal on the market than anyone else. Don't know if current management will continue those efforts.

It should also be noted the deceased owner of OEM developed the repop SMTA grills but for some reason withdrew that product. I bought one but it is still in the box. Don't know if they are any good. Always wondered why they are no longer available.

I had heard that Mark Wood had looked into reproducing M / SM hoods but dropped the idea when they couldn't come up with a machine that would roll the lip on the side of the hood.

Maybe so, but OEM's reproductions are not the same as the originals. Usable but not the same. I have a fender and a hood from OEM for my Super A, they are noticably different from the originals. But, better than the beat up old ones. Also heard from a reliable source that the SMTA grilles did not fit very well.

One just sold on ebay 1-2days ago.Looked straight
and needed paint. Grill was at 180 with some time
left and the hood was quite a bit less. Chuck

If I was from Missouri, I'd say "show me".

I hadn't recalled the sales that you spoke of so I searched "Completed Listings". No MTA, SMTA, SW6TA hood or grill was listed for the past month.

Surprisingly, the SW6TA will work. Don't know why the factory bothered punching the cultivator bracket holes. The holes don't exist on the W-400 grill.

Someone has a SMTA grill with a "Buy-it-Now" price of $700. It is a current listing. He may also have the hood but I didn't look for it. I am sure it is high priced as well.

Say Wardner, Where are you looking?? Last night
just after 7:00 (20:09:09pdt) the grill sold for
180.35 item # 400168234338. Then at 20:10:38 the
hood sold for $46.50 item # 160499537086. This is
ebay-not craigslist.Nov4

Wardner, what on a SW6TA works. Hood doesn't even have a place for the steering shaft, never mind that it would look like crap on a SMTA. Grill may go over the radiator, but its a different part and shape, no opening in the bottom or any of the 4 holes in front. Has light mounting holes in the sides.
Reason W series don't have any holes for culivator brackets like row crops is because there's nothing behind the grills to bolt to.

Dave,

OK, here's a puzzle for you. Why does this grill have two posting holes where the McCormick badge goes and not one where the IH badge should be? I bought it as a SMTA grill and only noticed the small holes later. I am assuming that it came off a SW6TA. I have never seen a complete SW6TA. Yes, I agree that the hoods would never swap.

Chuck,

I entered both eBay numbers in the completed listings and nothing came up. But I believe you. Must be something wrong with my search method.

But it is odd that I have separate eBay alerts on Farmall hoods and grills. I don't recall the two pieces hitting my email. And if they had, I would have added them to my watch list and they would still be in "My eBay" summary. Oh, well.

Thats a IH part # 59516 DE grill and the reason there's more SMTA type grills around than tractors. Grill was sold as a replacement part for M tractors that used bolts to mount grill on up, and SM tractors. Look at all parts books for M.SM,SMTA dated middle 1954 and after and thats the grill listed. Unless there was a 59516 DD grill left in the IH parts system the late grill is What you got to replace a grill on say a 1948 M in say 1955. Don't know if the farmall emblem mounting holes were already drilled or added if putting grill on a M tractor.
There was a serial # break on SW6 tractors, ones with frame rails used the same hood T/A or not. 6 grills don't have the big opening at the bottom.

Hey Wardner, would you consider selling one of the MD hoods? My Stage 2 SMD has been "re-engineered" in the past, has a hole cut in the top for PS reservoir access, and the latches must have broke, as tabs have been welded on and the hood bolted on- not pretty. They also put on a generator belt that was too long, and instead of getting the right belt, cut a hole in the hood for the regulator to hang out of...
If you'd like to sell one, can you send me an email with price & location, and maybe any parts you're looking for as trading material? Thanks
