560 diesel hard to start

I"ve owned a 560 diesel tractor for several years and it has always started right up if you used the glow plugs for about a minute before trying to crank it. Just recently, it has gotten hard to start after using the glow plugs. I now have to give the engine a shot of starting fluid and when it cranks, it smokes and misses pretty bad for a couple of minutes before the engine smooths out. Any suggestions on what the problem might be and how to fix it?

I'm thinking your inectors have become clogged and they are slobbering fuel instead of spraying it into the chamber. There is injector cleaners you add to the fuel, that will help clean up injectors and get them spraying properly. i went through that with a tractor I bought that had been sitting in a shed for 8 years, couldn't start it without ether, now it will start in warm weather without glow plugs and starts easily compared to the way it was..all I used was an injector cleaner.

The symptoms you describe are what happens when you start a D282 without the glow plugs. Are you sure they are working?

first of all throw that starting fluid can as far as you can! have seen engine problems caused with this stuff on these engines.using starting fluid while holding glow plugs is a big no no. first check the glow plugs to make sure that their working. and check batteries to make sure its spinning fast enough. as mentioned may need injector or pump work.

Absolutely do not use ether with glow plugs. You can blow the manifold and air cleaner clear off the tractor. You have to realize that at least one intake valve is always open and when you spray ether in , if glow plugs are working at all you are spraying right onto a red hot glow plug.
