For years this tractor would start very easy in any tempurature. Went to cut brush and had a very hard time starting, had to use ether. Doesn"t start any better when hot. This tractor is 12v.

I have replaced the the spark plugs, fresh gas and put in a new battery last year. Any hints, distributor, coil, other?

before you throw any more parts at it, give it a good checking over first. pull a spark plug and see if you have a bright blue spark when you crank it over. check the ignition timing. check the fuel flow at the carburetor, pull the drain let it run in a can for a minute or so. clean and check the oil bath air cleaner. then run a compression test both dry and wet and see what kind of cylinder pressure you have. around 90 psi each cylinder is the minimum i'd be looking for, with no more than 10 percent variation between cylinders. with it having to get a sniff of ether to start, i am leaning to low compression, either rings or valves. run compression with ignition off, throttle wide open, all spark plugs removed. then go back with a couple oil can pumps of oil in each cylinder and re-run the test.

One like that could be as simple as needed a good tune up, or even having the air cleaner oil changed. Or it could take a lot more then that. Trouble shooting is what you need to start with and things like checking the spark and fuel flow are the first place to check

If ether makes it fire and run, it's either a fuel issue, or time for a rebuild.

Do you know how to use the choke?

A lot of times when one will start on starting fluid it is in fact a weak spark since either burns at a lower temp then gas does and a weak spark will light it but not gas

How exactly should the choke be used? I am rebuilding my H now, but earlier it would start harder than expected and a gulp of fuel would dump out of the carb at startup.
Thanks in advance
