Hi folks,
I have a friend whose dad has a Farmall M that has not been run in approx 15 years. Apparently last time it was used, they suspected a head gasket issue. He might be interested in selling it, and I might be interested in buying it, but I dont have an idea of what it is worth. It has been sitting outside of the barn for the last 15 years or so. He also has a loader for it (dont know specifics about loader) and a disc (dont know specifics on that either) that have not been used for the same amount of time as the tractor. Any ideas on what you all would roughly pay for something like that? I know I am missing the details, but a rough idea? Just a regular M, no diesel, no TA, not a super.

Thanks!

Depending on the conditions of the tires(sitting for 15 years, I'd guess they're probly shot) it is worth scrap price, maybe a few bucks more. You can find a running M with decent tires for somewhere in the neighborhood of $7-800. So a non running, with unknown issues, is worth far less.

scrap is $80/120 a ton in your area? You have 2 tons in M, offer accordingly. Problem is a "suspected head gasket" that"s been setting outside -or inside- 15 years is liable to have a siezed engine and needs complete rebuild. You might get lucky and only need oil change and put some ATF/Acetone in cylinders, charge battery to start-- but NOT likely. Running work Ms going from $1000.00 to $2000.00 - if you don"t want a rebuild project, don"t offer much more than scrap and part out the main pieces over 6 months. If you have some time and open shop space- rebuild kits are available with pistons, sleeves, gaskets for $500.00/$700.00, add cost of 10 gallons oil- the tranny and rear end hold a lot-check tires and have fun. A 40/50 hp newer tractor will set you back $20,000.00 plus. RN.

Many factors come into play on one like that. Tires good or bad, sheet metal good or bad, engine locked up or will still spin over etc etc etc. Could be as low as around $300 figuring that scrap is going for $100-per-ton. Or as high as $800 if the tires are still good and the sheet metal is good and the equipment is still good enough to bring back to life with little work. But I would probably take an educated guess it is closer to being a $300 machine then it is an $800 one

Offer him $100.00. He may make a counter offer.
If it sounds good to you, buy it or walk away. I paid a $100.00 for a Farmall A and that included the 16-inch plow. Hal
ps; It was in sad shape too.

Thanks guys,

That is what I was kind of thinking, as I figured it would be a stuck engine with probably a total rebuild. He was asking $700 originally, then to $900. I just wanted to make sure I was not way out of line thinking that is too much. I guess someone at work told him that $900 was too little.

Have a great evening guys!

Erik you can buy them for $1100 to $1500 in running order.... I bought a 1946 M parts tractor without wheels, tires, starter, carb and drawbar, etc for $160... tranny gears that I bought it for were junk in that one too... The one you are looking at may be very simular to this.... May have had several other "old age" problems when it was parked; in addition to a "possible head gasket"... How badly worn out is the drawbar and steering..this may reflect the rest of the tractor's general condition. It would have to be one real Honey of a non-running tractor to be worth what they are asking for it.

I'm with Allan and the rest. This sounds like a 300 dollar tractor to me rather than 900. Need more info too such sheet metal condition and rubber.

Last one I bought paid 300 for. '46 loose not running distillate, relatively tight steering, lamberts, no wear on pto shaft, rubber holds air.

Last two before that paid 250 each for. One had a good motor and one had a good transmission. All was fixable.
