Checking the oil level in the filter cavity will not work. The system is designed to keep that area full of oil no matter what the level is in the rest of the system. The inlet to the filter cavity is above the oil level so it doesn't drain all the oil out when the filter is changed. It also keeps the pumps from drawing in air when the tractor is started.

Bud, the easiest thing to do is pull the oil level plug on the side and fill it. Then make you a dip stick with a tape measure, dowel rod, stick or whatever. Run it all the way to the bottom of the tranny. Mark the oil level. You never have to pull the side plug again. If you have drained it or it is low, you can add a quart/gallon at a time and make a mark. Besides the seal the tranny has a habit of leaking and allowing the hydraulic pump to suck air. The cure is to overfill it by 5 gallons. Doesn't hurt to overfill it by that much. Done all the time by people here.
