head bolt torque

So I torqued the head bolts on my A to 65 pounds and later (after I ran it and warmed it up to re-torque it later) I read that now due to the newer gaskets it should be torqued to 80 pounds. My question is did I ruine the gasket by not torqueing it down to the correct spec right away? Saying, if water (yah, I just used straight water. Gonna drain it later to flush it.) got onto the gasket will it cause it to degrade in any way?

P.S. when I re-torque it I will do it to 80 pounds and I used PLENTY of copper coat.

your in good shape, just retorque to 80 lbs and all is fine. the plenty copper coat thing is not nesessary , as it only takes a thin film on gasket as the rest will only be squeezed out anyway. its just a little extra insurance for no leaks. make sure you reset your valve lash as it will decrease once you torque head again.

Just like rustred says, go ahead and torque it to 80 ftlbs, you will be fine. Don't forget to set the valve lash while it is warm.

Thanks guys. I thought it wouldn't have hurt anything but just wanted to make sure.

On a side note, trying to hand crank a fresh rebuild with 3 1/8 bore firecrators takes a little more effort than what it was before :)

Guess I will need to go out and re-torque the head on the BA. Shame since to do so you pretty much have to pull the rocker arms off since there is no room for a socket any other way and I have the hood on now and almost to the point of doing all the new wiring on it. But I guess it is better then having it get coolant in the oil. Got figure the books say 65 ft/lbs but these guys say 80ft/lbs

Same size stud as an M has. 80-85ft lbs.
The repair manual for IH was updated after the first couple of years. Check a newer manual for valve lash as the first ones were to tight per manual

Shoot again your at it. My manual is less then 5 years old but still says 65ft/lbs. Why don't you do this and I'll do the same. Leave me and my post alone and I'll do the same for yours since you and I will never see eye to eye and all you even do with my post is cause problems any how. At least I try to help people

I said that they are the same size as an M, so torqing them to 80-85 lbs is ok. I never said that an M was 85 ft lbs. Just that they are the same size. Finish 1st grade and learn how to read.

That is because you have an IT manual not an IH manual. You see I have a dyno and if you torque on the head bolts is to low and you put the engine to work, it will leak. You try to help people with incorrect info.

At least I am not dumb enough to reuse a head gasket.lol. you were in the navy how many years and nothing stuck.
