getting ready to paint the 350............

just wondering how many people take the time to pull the rear wheel weights before painting?? looks like it would take at least half a day to pull them off, or is it not worth the time??

If they're the 140# one piece weights they are pretty quick to put on and off. The only hard part is lining it up with the bolts so they don't push out when you try to hang the weight back on there. They don't feel as heavy as they are because they are so compact(this may just be my own warped mind, not sure for others).

If you want the whole tractor painted it is worth the time. I use an engine hoist, not hard, more like 30 minutes a wheel, I work slow. To do it right, you also need to take the rims off.

You get a much better paint job ifyou remove the weight and the rim. If the tires are loaded, i only remove the weights. good luck.

And, if you have to move them you don't have to worry about scratching the paint. Axles are the one place where rust doesn't bother me.

I always paint my axles black i think that just makes every thing look better and unless you use this tractor as a working tractor you shouldnt have to move the wheels agian.

Remove the weights. You will be simply amazed at the amount of rust and other crud hiding behind them. I've also found some of the bolts so rusty that I'm not sure just how they were able to keep the weights firmly attached.

I didn't remove them on my H when I did the restoration on it. You can't tell that I didn't, and it looks great. It's up to you. They're really not that heavy if you do decide to. I just put a set of wheel weights on my M the other day. Took maybe 10 minutes for both sides.

well i pulled the weights after all........... i figured the weights would be frozen on the bolts but they came right off with no problem. and there is a ton of rust behind them!!!! thanks for the imput
