tranny issue

Well this isn"t a tractor issue but I"ve asked on another forum and the I"ve only got one response. I was takin my 68 Dodge Coronet down my road Saturday. While goin up a small hill it started to whine like it had a blower. I pulled in my grandparents driveway and tried to go forward but nothing. It goes in reverse so I backed it back to my house down the road. It goes in retreat fine with no whine but then I have no forward gears and it whines. The only issue is that it has maybe 100 miles on it since I had it rebuilt by a local shop and I baby the crap out of it because it seems to always have a problem. The guy on the other forum said he thoiught it was the clutch pack. I greatly appreciate any ideas

Will it move forward in manual low?

That problem is caused by (either) the rear band, rear clutch or the mechanical overrunning clutch isn't holding.

You're "whiring" noise sure smacks of a bad overrunning clutch.

I believe as Allan, that it is either the Rear band/Clutch (depends on which tranny it has) or the overrunning clutch. I believe the rebuilder shoud be responsible for repair. (even lapsed time should not affect the warranty, many times components are rebuilt while a car is being constricted.) jim

If it has a small block(318-360) it will have the 904 trans. If it has a Big block (383-440) it will have a 727. Either trans works the same. The previous reply you got was correct. The rear most clutch pack in the trans is shot. Most likely due to improper clearance i.e. to much slop. of the clutch pack after installation of the new clutch disks and steels. (coincdently it works much the same way as a hand cluch on a JD, just fluid operated) There are very specific specs. that the clutch pack must be assembled to. The problem is in order to get the proper clearance a new pressure plate with diff specs is the proper way to adj the clearence. Most though just throw in and extra steel to take up the extra slack, due to the lack of factory avail parts. Option Number two is if the shop took a shortcut and DID NOT replace the rubber seals in that drum. Alot of shade tree mechanics dont relpace these due to the fact in order to replace them you need a special tool and press to decompress the springs in order to replace them. Option three is as said "does it move in manual 1st" if yes the overrunning clutch is bad. if not then its the clutches. At any rate; If you had the tranny rebuilt a 100 miles prior to this the they should be willing to look at it as re-work for free.

Ok thanks guys. It is a 383 with a 727 auto I forgot to put that ha. I will go talk to the guy that rebuilt it and have a talk with him this afternoon. Also it doesn"t go in low either. Pain in the butt. Thanks again for the responses
