Bought another tractor!!! :)

Well my dad and I went to an auction this weekend and drug home another tractor. :) Father and son that collected and restored tractors were selling off their collection. 80+ tractors, all but 6 ran. Most had already been rebuilt and had new or very good tires. About 15 had been fully restored. Most were Farmall and John Deere with a couple Allis Chalmers and Case. The John Deeres sold at what I would say was about average but the Farmalls sold cheap!!! I'm surprised I was able to control myself and only buy one. Thought you may be interested in the prices (tractors were good runners unless otherwise noted):

Is that an MV or a reverse operation tractor that's been unreversed? What does the data plate say? I thought all MVs had elevated wide fronts and all Cotton Pickers had single fronts. Pretty tractor though.

Something must have been really bad on that cheap SMTA. You can almost get that much for a good grill. And there is no question the grill and hood will bring more.

How many people at the auction?

I thought all MV had wide fronts too but the serial plate says MV on it! Drawbar is not correct to the tractor so maybe the front end is not either? I still thought is was a good buy as you dont see many MV's. The first three that were non-runners were not much more than parts tractors. I think that SMTA had gotten water in it...dont remember how good the sheet metal was. Alot of people at the auction so I was really surprised things did not sell higher. Glad I went as I got alot of parts too!

Man I just can't get into the look of single front wheel tractors! Good buy though. I would've had to have came home with a few of those Farmalls at those prices!

If all the casting codes end in "Z" and the hood, grill, and oil reservoir are there, it can't be a parts SMTA. It is only a unrestored SMTA. I have some ugly SMTAs that will never leave this property until at least $2500 changes hands. Well, maybe over my dead body at which point my brother will probably pay someone to haul them off as scrap. Ya, he doesn't understand. He likes wheelbarrows.

Ha well those 3 things were there! Personally I thought the two restored SMTA's sold pretty low considering they were both rebuilt, and had new tires and paint. One was the original working TA and the other had a brand new TA and M&W governor. Like I said though...all the Farmalls were selling low. I also picked up 2 good complete drawbars, 2 front wheel mud scrapers, a perfect H grill, perfect starter tank, and a single front wheel assembly for an M all for $200. Funny I wanted to buy the single front wheel assembly to put on a tractor and then bought a tractor with one already on it (they sold the parts first)!

Funny I wanted to buy the single front wheel assembly to put on a tractor and then bought a tractor with one already on it (they sold the parts first)! I kinda like the look of them; at least enough to have one in my collection. I should have bought more tractors too but the fiance would not have been too happy and my tractors are taking up more of my dads shop space than all of his equipment!

Oh man, I would've come home flat broke, with a tractor-trailer load of old iron... Maybe it's a blessing in disguise that these kinds of auctions never happen around here.

If the data plate says MV, it has a cotton picker front wheel adapted to it. There are also differences in the final drives on the MV and Cotton Picker tractors.

I was at that sale. Alot of tractors to be sold. I was trying to buy a few parts to finish some tractors this winter but did not bid high enough. Did you see his F-30 go for $7000? I thought it was crazy. The guys grandson wanted it but so did another guy. The BN is really nice too. I talked to the guy at the sale he said the MV come off of a cotton picker, that is why the shifter is on the right side of the column. Hope this doesnt burst your bubble. Still is a very sharp looking tractor.

The right side shifter means it has this type of drop box which is fitted to Cotton Pickers.

However, I was at a CA cotton grower's yard several years ago and he had two pairs of the chain drive drop boxes on pallets. I would have bought a set but he didn't have the special axle trumpets (housings) that go with them. I was confused and still am.

Maybe Harold H will chime in.

Matt,

Just want to add that you may have been defrauded. If your tractor has a MV tag, and it was offered for sale as a MV, and if you have gear drive drop boxes, something is not right. If you have buyer's remorse and would rather have your money than the tractor, I believe the auctioneer is obligated to buy it back. Perhaps he should pay you some damages as well as you did haul it home. I don't believe any "as is, where is" disclaimer applies here. If he refuses, I would contact first the state board that licenses auctioneers.

But this is a legal matter and I am not a lawyer nor am I familiar with the law in the state the tractor was sold.

Bear in mind that reproduction tags are widely available from many sources. Does your tag look fresh, as in new?

No these guys are correct. It is a cotton picker tractor. I was mistaken before and the tag does say just "M". I fully plan on keeping the tractor and still feel it was a good buy considering the rebuilt motor, new tires and new paint. I am not a hard core collector and this is still not something you see everyday.

I thought it was $8000 but either way that was pretty high! I bid on a few other tractors including that BN but let it go...Did you notice it did not have a battery and the generator was not hooked up?

Even if it was cotton picker tractor it is still a very cheap tractor considering all that has been done to it. A very good buy.

Hi.I have a parts tractor with that type of axle.but it do not have the drop boxes on it.would that be a cotton picker tractor.if so how do u tell if it has the low first gear.it do not have the serial tag,do not have pedister either....

Tag should say "MCH" for a cotton harvesting M. We have a bunch of them out here in California.

I thought the BN was hand crank. One guy was looking at it an commented there was no place for a starter. Where you there with your dad? I think I walked past you 2 a few times while you were standing by the pallet with the draw bars on it. Did you buy the disc brakes for the super H? Did you see the Super H tank that only brought $15 it was a from a 54 and a primered and ready to go.

Yeah I was there with my dad. I bought the two drawbars off that pallet. I did notice the BN was a hand start. It also had no battery in the box and the generator was not hooked up.

Where did you get that parts drawing from??? Cant seem to find that drawing anywhere. Will the tractor say "MCH" on the serial tag or will it just say "M" and have an X20 at the end of the serial number? Tractors are kept an hour away at my parents so have not had a chance to inspect further to see what serial plate actually says. Thanks!!!
