Ok I just got my 856 home and the first thing I did was drain all the fluids.Would it be a good idea to put Lucas in with the rearend oil ? If so how much should I use ? I am thinking about a gallon in the main case and a quart in each bull gear housing. What about the PTO I drained it to should it be just plain oil or will the lucas help it also ? I know years ago they put STP in the rearends but I can t remember how much.

They make a lucas additive for hydraulics. I use the Lucas Oil 10018 Hydraulic Oil Booster with Stop Leak in the hytrans.

Save your money on the additives, they are not needed. Just buy HyTran from CaseIH and you will be fine. It has all the additives that are needed. The pto pulls its oil from the rear housing with its own pump. So there is no PTO oil to change in a 56 series tractor.

I quess I"m showing my age but I can remember when we use to use STP in engines & rear ends. As for the Lucas, IIRC, they call for 10% Lucas Oil for "normal" and 20% on highly worn. W use Lucas in our semi rearends & trannies at the 10% rate. So far no problems but then, there may not have been a problem if we didn"t use it. Like anything else, some swear by it & others swear at it. You have to be your own judge.

There is a HUGE difference between a truck transmission or differential housing, and the rear end on an 856.

That difference is, the 856's rear end is also the hydraulic sump. That oil is circulated through pumps and provides your power steering, brakes, 3pt hitch, and remote hydraulics.

You don't need that additive stuff gumming up the works.
